DOUGAL SMITH - MAY 16th 2012

Just wanted to let you know that Dougal came 2nd in the Pedigree Veteran class at the dog show, photo attached. He is very proud and had to have a special dinner tonight. Lizzie and Nellie came nowhere in their class, my neighbour Natalie took them in the ring and they entered Pedigree Bitch, but they looked so scruffy, they got nothing but were very keen, and once they have had their teeth cleaned, watch out for the RSPCA open day in July and their dog show.

Take care, Pat and 'the gang'

lily

We took in Lily (formerly Maisie), our Scottie cross, in late November. We now can't imagine a time before she came into our lives, she's so affectionate and playful and loves being made a fuss of as much as - or maybe more than! - she loves food. We'd like to thank the STECS volunteers for helping us to find such a beautiful dog.

Hi there, Here's a quick update from Holland.

jock

Just to let you know that my move to Holland went ok and I've settled in OK. I'm very happy that I've got miles of beach, dunes and woods only 10 minutes away from my new home. And as you can see my friend Major and I can't get enough.

BONNIE PORTRAITS

I am the proud owner of Bonnie, who we adopted with the help of STECS last October. She's an adorably sweet girl – she's Miss September in the STEC's 2012 calendar!

I'm a professional illustrator and designer, but have always enjoyed painting dog's portraits in my spare time too; and then along came my beautiful Scottie who has been my inspiration to create my website dedicated to my passion of art and dogs – and so www.BonniePortraits.com
was born!

I'd like to share the website with my fellow STECS members, who may be interested in my artwork, so I was wondering if you would be so kind to give BonniePortraits a mention on your website.

kind regards         Melody-Anne

Any Scottie owners who have a dog who is a -

Fussy Eater

Delicate stomach

Convalescing from illness or surgery

I would like to recommend - 'Fish 4 Dogs'. They do sachets of Salmon Mousse which is 99% Salmon. I have 3 Scotties over 10yrs old and the oldest has become a very fussy eater but something with a strong flavour mixed with his regular complete food softened with warm water always does the trick & now he is hooked on the Salmon Mouse. He also has quite a delicate stomach & I have found a lot of foods on the market are too rich. It is also very good for a light meal post surgery or illness. They also do treats called Tiddlers which are very popular with my dogs and they are good for their teeth. I buy in bulk to reduce the cost.

The Web site is www.fish4dogs.com - Give it a try.

HARLEY - SAD NEWS MAY 14TH 2012

Just thought I'd let you know that Harley suffered a heart attack while keeping watch outside his owner's bookshop, a couple of weeks ago. Although he went straight to the vet his owner was advised to let him go. Don is obviously very upset at the loss of such an old trooper, who accompanied him to all sorts of exciting places while he was serving in the army. He would have been 21 on his birthday in June. Millie, his long term companion is missing him as well. - Isla

5th MAY 2012

In 2004 Linda and I attended a Great Scots Gathering in Alberquerque, New Mexico and today we heard from a couple who contacted STECS through the website and it turns out they were there too:

LETTER FROM AMERICA

We have 3 Scotties, Montgomery he'll be 12, Gillis who is 2.5 and Gordon almost a year. We've been going to Door County Scottie Rally in Wisconsin the last 5 years. We got to catch up with Joseph Harvill 2 years ago when he attended. He certainly has had a trying journey and I hope the magazine can continue. I belong to a Yahoo group that I will share your information. I try to help with the Rally which has made quite a bit of money for rescue/research and I try to help with Transports between Kansas City and St. Louis with the St. Louis Scottish Terrier Rescue.
I ran across your name because a dear friend of mine has a grandson who loves to cook. When we attended the GSG my husband won a prize and we got a STECS T-shirt and an apron and this is how we came to contact you. Small world eh!.

THE OLDEST SCOTTIE IN HISTORY

By Mr David Ord from Hexham.

roman

It sits in a case in the Clayton collection at Chesters Roman fort museum on the Roman Wall at Chollerford. It dates back to around 120 AD and proves that dog breeds were being established in those days. It is labelled a 'scottie'...it is only about an inch and a half long. It was apparently a 'token' that is associated with healing in a spiritual way...made of bronze.

A reminder fron Cynthia Orrey

With all the recent postings abour missing Scotties, I thought it would be a good time to remind all owners that our 'little friends' should be tagged and micro chipped. I'm sure most of you will already have done this, but if you not it would make a lovely Birthday present for your Scottie

First Aid For Heatstroke - Learn The Basics To Save Your Pet's Life

We all know we shouldn't leave a dog or any other pet in a hot car as they can heat up like

ovens and literally cook the pet alive. But even the most responsible owner

may not realise how hot their pet is in a garden, a conservatory or a sunny kitchen

when the weather gets warmer, or you may discover another

animal who's been exposed, so it pays to know what to do in an emergency.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs and cats include heavy panting, profuse salivation, a rapid pulse,

very red tongue and gums, lethargy, lack of co-ordination, inability to stand up, vomiting,

diarrhoea and even loss of consciousness.

If your dog or cat shows any symptoms of heatstroke, move him/her to a shaded,

cool area and ring your vet for advice immediately. Heatstroke can be fatal and

should always be treated as an emergency.

You need to urgently lower the body temperature, but don't use very cold water,

to avoid shock: put the animal in a cool shower or spray them with cool water

in the breeze of a fan. Cats may be happier to be wrapped in a cold, damp towel.

Let them drink small amounts of cool water.

Continue dousing the animal with cool water/towels until his/her breathing

starts to settle but don't let them start to shiver with cold.

Once cool, take the animal to your vet's, ensuring your car is as cool as possible for the journey.

If you see a dog or cat in a car on a warm day the RSPCA asks you to please

call the Police on 999. It could be a matter of life and

death so urgent action needs to be taken.

LUNGWORM - IS YOUR DOG AT RISK?

The life-threatening lungworm A.vasorum is carried

by slugs and snails. If your Scottie comes into contact with

these common garden pests there is a risk it could become infected.

This is a problem that is becoming more widespread

in the UK. Sometimes dogs become infected by eating a

slug or snail that is on it's bone.

Symptoms:

Breathing problems, coughing or easily tired.

Poor blood clotting leading to excessive bleeding

from minor wounds, bleeding nose or eyes.

Seizures, spinal pain weight loss vomiting.

Talk to your vet if you suspect a problem.
